Have a Merry Christmas!

With Christmas just around the corner, everyone is planning their own memorable Christmas. From young I imagined Christmas as snow falling, house decorated in lights with a Chritmas Tree in the hall decorated with beautiful ornaments and Santa Claus delivering presents. Many people would have the idea of having a great bash with loud music, dancing and alcohols with the hope that we can party right through the next year and have a great start to the year. All these are because Christmas has become too commercialise so that people will spend more to buy presents and to frequent the pubs. I’ll say it’s quite an effective marketing strategy. It is the festival I most look forward to after Chinese New Year.

So, my good friend Angeline has the best intention to invite all her friends to celebrate Christmas with her by attending a musical in her church. Frankly speaking there was some reluctancy especially from me and being the straightforward me, I told her it’s not the way I plan to have Christmas. For this I really do apologise and I hope it does not put her off from future invitation. It is not my intention to insult any religions or put off any good intention to show us the real Christmas. How many of us really know the meaning to Christmas?

As my good friend Angeline explains,"The whole idea Christmas came about was because of the birth of One Child, Jesus of Nazareth. He is also known as Christ Jesus, who founded the early church.. Christ-mas? That’s the whole idea.. He later on died on the cross on Good Friday as an atoning sacrifice for our sins (because He was without sin-He ganti us on the cross) and was raised again on Easter day (tat’s why we have eggs - a symbol of life). The only thing we need to do is believe in Him, and we shall have eternal life.

So, for us, Christians, we go to church on Christmas day not only to celebrate the birth of our Saviour, but also to remind us of the gift of life He has given us (tat’s why we give presents)."
Thank you Angeline for telling us the meaning to Christmas. But my main idea is not to party on Christmas day. I think I’m getting old to have that kind of energy. This festive season, I would rather spend it with loved ones and maybe some yum cha and catching up with old friends. Hmmn, maybe some chocolates, cookies and soft drinks in Angeline’s house?  Being a working mum, the only free time I have to spend with my little one is at night and Sundays and seeing him grows up so fast make me realised that time is important to spend it with your family. It won’t be long when he outgrows that little clothes and shoes. Also with the new year coming, it’s time for new resolutions and to reflects on what you have achieved and learnt for the year. I thank God for giving me the gift of Life and brought me the new meaning of Christmas this year and thank you, my friend for explaining the meaning of Christmas!
